About the Company

Greenville Federal Credit Union is truly a low-cost alternative to traditional banking. We have all the products and services found at traditional banks but we are fundamentally different in that our account holders are also owners. Our philosophical difference is huge - we view and treat our members as owners, not as potential sources of income. As a not-for-profit entity, our focus has always been to help our members prosper by providing money-saving advantages and reasonably priced financial services.

Our community charter allows anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Greenville County to become a member. Membership is also available to relatives of members.

First, many of the staff were helpful, and very pleasant to interact with. I love the layout and beverages they offered. My primary bank is nothing like it, but I feel my primary bank prioritizes being a financial institution. I opened an account with GFCU in hopes to get a small loan for home improvements at a lower interest. Pretty much borrowing about a tenth of what I had there. I discussed and gave my information to the loan officer. The subject of income came up. I was leaving a job delivering Amazon packages and was planning on doing another line of work, loved the job just needed a break physically. I told them I was changing jobs , I am almost retired but I estimated to make between twenty to twenty-five thousand elsewhere. I was declined. In short you could have been more helpful with suggestions/options instead of having one play from your playbook. Any hoo: I made what I said would, got a loan easily & make higher rates from my deposit then what you gave..

GFCU is THE BEST! Also, I wanted to specifically mention that Taylor is awesome! I was talking to her at an event and we started talking about GFCU. Even though it was not during business hours, she was happy to talk about her work. The obviously takes pride in what they do there! I was going to close my account, just because I moved to NC and opened a new bank, but she convinced me to keep my account open for the benefits of still having access to GFCU!

I opened up an account yesterday. Mainly because I was feeling the need to make more local connections in Greenville and thinking ahead to a possible car loan next year. Will compare notes side by side with my other CU (not local) and see what ends up being better. First impression was being very impressed when driving up. The Drive-thru and branch are separate buildings. The parking lot routes the flow of traffic around nicely. The branch is very spacious, and plenty of offices to help folks with their needs. I havent found much need to enter any bank branch for quite a few years. Again quite impressed with the visuals compared to the major big banks. My visit seemed pretty routine. Just providing some information to open an account and its open and ready to go. I didnt feel like I was being pushed into opening anything besides the required savings account for membership. The mobile phone app is solid. Better than I expected it to be. Credit Union apps arent known to be as polished as the large bank apps. GFCU is pretty loaded with customizations. I have read some of the previous bad reviews, and I do not think they are valid enough to showcase a reason NOT to sign up with Greenville Federal. Word of mouth through All Things Greenville Facebook group raves about this place! I will update this review if I end up choosing GFCU for a loan!

Hate to be an old Fuddy-Duffy, but the branch manager of the Tanner Road branch is the most unprofessional looking employee that I have ever seen. Unless you have tons of money in your account I do not recommend this place for someone living paycheck to paycheck. My wife has an account here for little over 5 years and had 1 little mishap that would ve been about -$60 but instead they charged her overdraft fees for every single item that hadn t posted for about 2-3 days. 13. 13 overdraft fees that ended up putting her almost $500 in the negative. An entire paycheck the following week since she s direct deposit. That really hurts for family living paycheck to paycheck. So like I said. If you live paycheck to paycheck I WOULD NOT recommend this place. 3 wks later and still trying to catch up.

Avoid this bank at all cost. Me and my wife were members for over 4 years. Why we stayed so long is because of stupidity. For the first year it was ok, then they changed their online system. Ever since then it would show we have more money then we do, things would drop off just to get taken back out and leave us negative, the overdraft fees are expensive, and they don t stop overdrafts at all. Me and my wife would go negative 280$ before they would start stopping charges. Most of the country is paycheck to paycheck and if this is you this place is not for you, they do not care about you. Also, they re website about loans etc, says they are there to serve their customers not make money. That whole philosophy is a lie, it should say we are here to serve you if your credit score is perfect. Multiple times we have tried to get loans here to get turned down. Went in to refinance my car, had my uncle with me who has a 740 credit score. We got turned down because of not enough payments but they tried to talk him into a membership and a credit card. What a joke. Me and my wife switched to chase bank. We love it more. They have a secured banking option, which has no overdrafts. The available balance and the present balance are updated as soon as I swipe my card etc and it both shows the same thing, unlike this bank that wouldn t update in that way. They also block us from over drafting because we can only spend what we have. This is 2023, we shouldn t have to balance checkbooks anymore or be worried about overspending if a bank would do it s job. Also with the overdrafts, GFCU only allows the reversal of three. After that they won t refund you and they don t care if you can t feed your family or pay bills. I asked about getting some returned when we were negative 280 and the rude lady on the phone got smart in the way she said no sir we can t because it s marked here we can t. Avoid this bank and the employees. They only want your money and they only care about you if you have a good credit score. This is for the one on tanner road next to woodruff road.

It is categorically wrong that they are reporting my account past due when it is not showing that way on my account. Miriam is a serious bully refusing to do anything about it and threatening to make it worse. This is the second time Miriam has threatened me. I am working on credit repair and she threatened me when I asked for some assistance. It is very upsetting.

They are, for the most part, great! The one thing that upsets me trying to contact them. Rarely is there a time when I call and I am told that my wait is 15 minutes, and I am still on the phone 30+ minutes later, still waiting for someone to answer. If I use the prompt to hold my place in line where someone will contact me it may be hours before I get a response. Generally this isnt a huge deal, but if my card is flagged for fraud, because I crossed a state line then I may be waiting at a gas station unable to pay for the gas I pumped till I can clear this up. If this occurs after hours, during lunch, or on the weekend, you better have some backup cash or a card from an different institution.

OMG. I needed help financing my car, and my Credit Union took very good care of me. Nisha Talley (GFCU Representative) was SO FREAKIN NICE AND HELPFUL, I cannot express enough how good and how much she took care of me. My son went today and wanted to join and apply for a loan to buy a car. The lady that helped him was very rude and dismissed him quickly. She didn t even put his information in the system. He s a hard worker with a steady job and makes great money, but she didn t want to help him. He was showing independence and Responsibility by braving this task of taking control of his finances. I see now that this company has no intention of helping out younger generation do this. What a complete disappointment. Especially since she wore cross earring like she was Christlike.

Recently moved to Greenville from far far away. Walked in to open an account with my family. Was told it was lunch time and the wait time was an hour and there were other people waiting in front of me. Weird. Open an account online and surprise surprise won t work because I m from out of state the whole reason I tried to do it in person. Update: Drive up atm NEVER works. Literally never works. Always gives an error. I can go to any atm anywhere and it works the first time every time. I ve mentioned it several times to the tellers as I do the reverse of shame to get into the teller line.

Heidiann Paulus Duru assisted me in processing my loan. I assumed it would take several days before I would know anything. Even with me making a mistake when signing the on-line documents, the entire process was completed in a couple of hours. Joining a credit union can prove to be slightly more challenging than joining a normal bank since customers have to meet certain requirements in order to become members. Despite having such requirements, GFCU (Greenville Federal Credit Union) is a GREAT financial institution that values its customers and treats them like family. GFCU has an amazing staff that will provide the HIGHEST level of customer service; in my case, member specialist Thomora Mosely treated me with kindness and humanity, and was able to answer all of my questions and solve all of my issues. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS--they deserve ZERO stars. HORRIBLE service, rude, ignorant employees and infuriating, questionable tactics. I made the awful mistake of obtaining a mortgage through these liars and it is truly one of the biggest regrets of my life. For years now I have had the displeasure of dealing with Courtney, Anesa, Stephanie, and numerous other rude, incompetent employees. And if you think Paul Hughes (President) cares, he must only care about the money he is making b/c he clearly doesnt care about how badly his customers are treated or how theyre ripped off by his employees, most of whom dont seem to know what is going on with their own products, services, rules, etc., but they will sure give you plenty of attitude nonetheless. And whatever you do, do NOT open a checking or savings account here---they will take your money and do with what they please, without any notification to you (because thieves generally dont give notice) and if you need help, forget about it---helping is the last thing they care to do here. Theyd sooner sell you another questionable, shoddy product than help you correct the issues they caused in the first place. I dont say this lightly, but I truly do HATE GFCU.

Considering they have nearly the same amount of 1 star reviews as 5 I probably don t have to write this but would rather others don t make the same mistake. Worst experience I ve ever had with a so-called professional business. Hi was planning on opening my business account and my wife s and I as personal account until I went through the HELOC process. The gentlemen who helped set it up was great!! (Brandon). The rest was a disaster. After I paid $600 they sent out a very old man who knew nothing about Greenville or our house. He actually used comps from smaller houses built by a different builder when there were THREE houses of similar size and build right beside mine. After sending Courtney a note showing the incapable gentleman had not only used incorrect comps BUT didn t even have the square footage correct Ms. Oglesby let me know that their management team ( as a national sales manager I saw ZERO management qualities hence the quotations) were standing behind the absurd appraisal. All in all I paid $600 dollars to learn this is not a place I want to have my business or personal accounts or do any business with since of course they didn t refund my money even after the BUILDER showed the appraisal was completely incorrect in square footage which negates it immediately. Do yourselves a favor and look up Carolina Foothills or another credit Union when making your consideration.

Had a very good experience today with Chris in obtaining a personal loan. He was very knowledgeable, helpful and thorough and I enjoyed working with him. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is my credit rating is excellent and they still fixed a pretty exorbitant interest rate to my loan. That was disappointing but Chris was not!

This bank has turned into a absolute joke, My wife and I have been members for well over 12 years. I want to refinance my car with them and its more of a task than its worth. We filled out the app online on Monday and now its Friday and nothing from them, the communication is gone with this bank. Try taking a trip our of state and every single purchase is flagged as fraud. I have now been sitting on the phone trying to talk to someone for the last 22 min, This bank went from feeling like a part of the family to another Bank of America, Money Hungry with no customer service.. I think we will be pulling our money away just like a lot of other people.. What a shame this place has become.

One of the worst experiences my wife and I have had with a credit union! Applied for a refinance on an auto loan and was helped by someone named Heidi Duru. She didn t listen to our needs and assumed we wanted a loan for a new vehicle. After getting a run around about my credit, everything was approved pending for a loan. Term limits and monthly cost was given to me. I had not given any information or payoff for my vehicle, so where the loan terms came from was beyond me. I had sent multiple messages throughout the week to Heidi Duru, which she finally responded saying she emailed me and it was my fault for not hearing back from her because I didn t respond back. Heidi called me yesterday to ask how we were going to proceed because she hadn t heard from us. I told Heidi she was misinformed about our requests and I made it clear what we were looking for, to which she raised her voice and told me my credit hindered me from obtaining this loan. Keep in mind, the underwriters already approved me for a loan(without giving me any info on this). I told Heidi I would pursue a refinance loan through another credit union and she began to yell at me through the phone. I immediately hung up. I am currently in the process of shutting down our accounts with this credit union and will look to the next steps in discipline for Heidi and management of this branch.

These people report to the credit bureau, incorrectly, ALOT, and then try to blame the customer. It is very upsetting. Oh, thank you for your response. Your manager did get in touch with me. She promised to take some action. She did not follow up on that action. When asked her about it, she was pretty rude about it. This is more than 50 point credit loss because of misreporting. It is so wrong.

Terrible. They dont deserve a 1-star rating. Theyve earned a ZERO in my book. Ridiculous and arbitrary policies, elitist employees (particularly managers). Terrible service. Their rates are not really that good, they rely on the fallacy of Credit Unions being low cost, owned by members, etc when in reality its a myth. You get MUCH better rates and service elsewhere. After a recent incident, I followed the BRANCH MANAGERS advice (which she accidentally let slip) and moved my business to Discover Bank. ABSOLUTELY THE BEST DECISION I EVER MADE. Savings rates 4x what GFCU offers plus NO FEES. EVER.

This Bank is not a good bank. They shut their app down February on the weekend my transactions where what they suppose to be. WHEN they brought the app back up -700 this bank isnt a over draft back you cant be in the negative like this with them. They took my money gave me no help and blamed it on the app shutting down! People are great but recently they bad some poor choices. They decided to go with a new platform on their website and phone application. Unfortunately they made the change without being prepared. Generally, you make sure all theses things are ready to go so that the transition is seamless. Its clear they dropped the ball on this! Now we cant access statements or even transaction activity from last year what-so-ever on one of our business accounts. And, of course its the weekend so calling in for help is useless. Makes it tough to complete tax work when you literally have zero to go on. Unfortunately this makes them look incompetent. Hopefully they learn from this.

The customer service here is a joke. Ive been with this credit union for over ten years and i used to be able to call and receive help over the phone. Now its 15 minutes on hold and still no answer. Its not much different visiting the branches in person either. I tried to finance my last car loan here but that was an absolute fiasco. I ended up going elsewhere. I still have my checking here but not for long. Beware if you have a credit card through the gfcu as thats a whole new world of headaches when your card is compromised. They dont make it easy to clear up.

If you are looking to finance a Tesla from this place think twice. They will put you through a bunch of hoops, tell untruths, and will be difficult to work with. We have 840 plus credit scores and we were treated like 2nd class citizens. Maybe they treat everyone like that. Went with another CU and couldnt have been more easy, professional and painless. If you are looking to finance a Tesla we recommend Allegacy FCU. They know what they are doing.

Brandon Scott from the Wadehampton branch was extremely helpful and made me and my mom feel like we were at home. Super friendly individual and really great at his job! But we wont stop there! Unfortunately Greenville Federal Credit Union have a rude belligerent employee name Kelly at the greer sc branch. She occasionally answers the phone line for the main branch. She is very rude and unwilling to help customers which is very sad. I have been a member with GFCU for years the unprofessional expierences . Hearing my co- worker on the phone with this rude lady is unbelievable. I have Witness such unprofessionalism its beyond my comprehension.... what happened to good customer service? Terrible credit union. They attempted to pull a bait and switch. I got a refi quote for my car loan from another credit union and sent it to GFCU. Their website says they can beat anybody by .25%. I was lied to over the phone and told that they could BEAT THE RATE and MATCH THE TERM offered, but that they couldnt offer the 2 months no payment/no interest promotion from the other credit union. I decided that I wanted a lower rate and brought all of my paperwork into their Tanner Rd location. After wasting an hour of my time opening an account and running through all the paperwork, I was told they would NOT be able to MATCH THE TERM offered from the other credit union. I HAD PROVIDED THE OTHER OFFER TO THEM IN WRITING PRIOR TO COMING IN! After pushing the point and telling the branch manager that I was guaranteed an offer over the phone - I was pretty much called a liar. Im VERY TEMPTED to report this credit union to CFPB since their behavior was nothing short of deceptive. They were a complete waste of time and I urge EVERYONE to shop around before moving forward with GFCU since I ENDED UP GETTING A BETTER RATE AND TERM THAN GFCU CAN OFFER. They are rude and lie.

I simply went in to withdraw funds from a teller. There were six or seven people in line which was fine, I was happy to wait. I was approached by some manager that explained to me the drive through was open and I needed to use that service. I told him I did not want to use that service, I just wanted to see a teller. His comment, that was not an option. Really? So much for the $40,000 pending loan with them. A simple embarrassment to customer service. It s a shame I drove 20 minutes to the FCU only to leave empty handed. If you want to feel minuscule, unimportant, or need to hear a condescending voice this place is for you. Under federal law can they actually refuse service? Highly agitated!

I have been with GFCU for 8 years. I got a car loan and was never late on payments and even pain it off early. Today I applied for a personal loan because I have no hot water at home and need a heater. I make roughly 2100 after taxes each month and was denied a loan because according to them I dont make enough. It was even suggested that because Im a woman I cant get a loan if I am on the loan without my husband. I am sorely disappointed in the great customer service they offer. Even after my account kept getting drained by fraudulent charges from people stealing my info I stuck with them and this is how they treat hard working loyal customers.

Not what you expect. If you are expecting to get an account with someone who understands your situation(like all other credit unions do) this is not the place for you. Relationships mean nothing at all to them with it comes to credit. This is not the financial institution to attempt to build or re build credit. Have had an account with them for over 5 years. Apply and put through unnecessary steps all to be turned down in the end because of poor payment history on accounts that I had before I even became GFCU customer. Perfect payment history with them but hey that does not matter. This is not a credit union like SC telco or Greenville Heritage. Its a cold hearted bank. Plain and simple.

Ive been a member with GFCU since graduating high school, so over ten years but as of today I will be closing my accounts and moving them to SC TELCO. I tried applying for an auto loan with Greenville federal and was thrown through to many unnecessary loops just to be denied. The next day I applied with SC TELCO and was instantly approved. They actually understand their customers and the situations most are in, and theyre willing to help rebuild and re-establish their customers unlike GFCU.

*WORST THAN BANK OF AMERICA AND THATS PRETTY BAD* This is not a credit union. This is a big bank trying to pretend to be a credit union. Do you know all the little annoying things big banks do that make you think if an actual person had looked at this or if they thought to treat me like a person instead of an account number this wouldnt have happened. Yeah this bank is all over that. My account was frozen one time because I forgot to sign the back of a check I deposited. (a $7.48 refund check) I can see if the check was an astronomical amount or more than I had available at them time. (account balance was over $5000 at the time) but to lock me out of my account if F ing ridiculous. Then didnt even tell me . I had to find out the hard way. If I have made an obvious hones mistake and you still decide to lock my account at least tell me. Phone call, email, text message he*l i would of took a smoke signal but dont let me wonder around and assume I can spend my money when you know I cant. I had a similar problem with bank of america and a mobile deposit. BOA called me and emailed me that day and told me to retake photo or bring the check into a branch within 48 hours or they would lock me out of online banking. BOA has time to call and tell me whats going on and give me adiquate warning when I maid a mistake BUT GFCU immediately punishes thats a little backwards in my opinion

Ive been a member going on 10 years now. Never had an unexpected fee, and never had a bad experience. Theyre always nice and friendly. Ive primarily used the branch in down town greer so cant speak for all branches as far as staff goes. Wish they were opened on Saturdays but win some lose some. Ive recommended this credit union to multiple friends and family members and Im sure they will back me up on this review.

Tried to take out an auto loan, and I was told that all I need was my pay stub and 25 dollars to open an account. After I waited for the banker to process the paper work he told me that I had to bring my down payment in to open an account and they would right a check for the full amount of the vehicle. I explained to him that the lady I spoke with on the phone did not mention any of this and he simply said, sorry thats the way we operate. Will never do business with this company

I have been a member with GFCU for several years. Today I waited for a notary for 40 minutes after I was told to wait and someone would help me. When I walked back up to the counter after 40 minutes to ask if there was a better time to come by, the answer was you could try another location. As I finished talking to the teller, one of the notaries became free and took in an individual who had just walked in the front door. The lack of customer service is disheartening.

Our mother tried to pay out inheritances to her children and the GFCU decided this was not to their liking. They locked the account down, after my mother went up to the branch, and are refusing to unlock it. My mothers bill payments were rejected and checks bounced. Not to mention, our family is being held hostage as they refuse to clear any of the checks my mother wrote. They also lied to me and my mother stating even if I had power of attorney she would have to come up to the branch. Not true as they admitted once I did drive my mother up there. Then they lied and said I didnt qualify to be added to her account so I could deal with this and not my 75 year old, bed ridden mother (whom I had to wheelchair up there!). Apparently this credit union thinks the money is theirs to do as they please (they moved money from account to account without approval and without reason). All because one woman, without speaking to anyone, including my mother, decided she didnt like what was going on. Is it because they dont want to lose the large amount of money they would need to pay out? I dont know but they are jerking a lot of people around and leaving my mother with no funds to buy food and pay her bills. Unbelievable. Unacceptable.
