Karen Starkey is the absolute best. During the two year journey I took to prepare for and achieve homeownership, I ve dealt some real characters. From day one, Karen was amazingly approachable at even late evening hours. When I was ready to go/apply, I think she called me back at around 9 PM. This was very unusual and really caught my attention in a good way! That is an unusually high level of dedication to one s profession. Everything was completely spot-on and moved as quickly as possible. She never ignored me. She never dismissed anything I asked about. She never tried to cover anything up. She never made light of any of my concerns. She never tried to push anything on me. She never lied to me, then denied it later. Just a really good soul of the earth human being. She s probably one of those people you meet once in a she never lied to me then denied it later. Just a really good soul of the Earth, Human Being. She s probably one of those people you meet once in a lifetime. (I m getting pretty emotional writing this). A few times I even told her on the phone that I absolutely love her because of the great gratitude she engendered. She s one of the good guys with a good heart who roots for the underdog. I seriously believe she cares more about human beings than the dollar bill. Every step of the way was very smooth and informative, from the automatically generated logical steps that get emailed, to the miniature video tutorials, I would get along the way that filled me in on the process, to the human interaction. With a couple of other banks I dealt with, the process was very automated and not a human experience. If you deal with Karen, you ll have a truly heartwarming human experience. She cares about you. I put 100% trust in her (after previously feeling let down by big-talking out-of-state sheisters). I can t say that for anyone else. Some people go to a job to earn a buck and profiteer. But I truly believe that Karin adores what she does and is dedicated to her first time homebuyer clientele. She s just a kind and considerate and good and honest person and, unlike other bankers, truly advocates for her clients and help avoid unnecessary complications or missteps. She never fumbled or fed me a line of bull or made a grave error that would cost me the mortgage (remember, there are some bad players out there in the world). my advice to any first time homebuyer would be to stay local, no matter how good of a story or helping the promises and out of state firm might make. Local people are more accountable, local people care more. Karen patiently waited by my side like a good friend during the process. And in the end, she even showed up to the signing to wish me luck, which blew my mind. I never expected to meet her in person. I feel like she put me first the whole way, even though she must ve had dozens of other clients. (Secretly she must have a clone who helps treat the other clients the same way because I don t know how she can be in all those places at once and do what she does so well ). And today, about a week after moving into my new home, it feels so good to have a roof over my head and no one can tell me what I can or can t do and I feel so safe and secure. It s a nice little neighborhood and we have big dreams about what we would love to do to beautify our new home. I got lucky on this one and if you re reading this, I hope you go to Karen too. She won t disappoint you. And, Karen, if you read this know that I still adore you. Thank you for making my dreams come true. And, by the way, we were not high dollar clients, and she still treated us like a million bucks.

We worked with Matt Steinke at First Ohio Home Finance. We went the Grants for Grads route and used an OHFA loan. Talked with another lender at the time who was trying to bully us into doing it the way they wanted. But Matt let us come in and tell him the route we wanted to go. Shasta Shiner from First Ohio was absolutely INCREDIBLE to work with. As first time home buyers, we were very intimidated by the entire process of buying a home, but Shasta took such good care of us. Upon submitting my application, I wasn t sure where it would go from there, but Shasta got the ball rolling quickly and assured us that a home purchase was attainable despite the crazy market right now. She assisted us in loan options, possible payments, and interest rates from start to finish. I reached out to Chris Wharton weeks before we decided to apply for a mortgage. He took his time explaining things and giving us a complete idea on what we need to move forward and be prepared. He was incredibly knowledgeable. Especially when it came to getting approval with us being self employed. I had talked to others before deciding to go with First Ohio Home and Chris was the deciding factor. The others I spoke with didnt understand our situation or werent sure about things, Chris was confident from the beginning and fully understood. He was always prepared with an answer and always responded. When we found a property and began the process Kaitlin Conidi jumped on board to help gather documents. She was incredibly prompt at answering questions. Our process was so smooth! We were prepared for a painstakingly, long, dreadful process like what had been described by EVERYONE around us, it was the complete opposite. In one month we went from offer accepted to clear to close. We had already experience what the home buying process was 5 years ago so we knew what to expect but to my surprise their process was much more simple and overall just better. We worked with Zach McGowan and closed on a condo Last Friday; great experience! As a first time home buyer, its hard to say it was a smooth process as there were so many up and down moments that were completely out of our control, but Zach did an amazing job protecting us from making any financial mistakes through through those moments. FIRST OHIO MORTGAGE earned my business for life. I cant find enough good words to describe how great and easy was working with TROY FARREL. He was very professional, responsive and helpful every time I contacted him. Without having a best credit score I was afraid that I might be decline for mortgage loan, but with his advice and help I were able to fix my credit and get approved for my first home mortgage. I just recently purchased a home and went to First Ohio Home Loans for help. My Mortgage Banker, Donna Ward, jumped on it the very first day and rode it through with me till the very end - less than 30 days later. She didnt hesitate to provide, research, investigate and step in for me every time someone needed information regarding my purchase. As a single woman home owner, the process could not have been smoother. Thank you, Donna Ward and First Ohio for a job well done. BTW, they are so good, this is my second time using them. I will never go anywhere else for the best rates and the best service in the least amount of time.

My wife and I had a master plan to sell our San Diego-area residence and use the proceeds to live mortgage-free in Columbus. Things changed once we actually started looking for homes. We became picky to the point where it increased our price range. I wanted a home with a great room and my wife wanted a yard with mature trees. Then came a finished basement; then came wood floors; then came a bathroom with a jet tub blah, blah, blah. So we needed a mortgage. But there was one big problem: I do gig and contract work. My wife is a stay-at-home mom. For tax and mortgage purposes, I m considered a small business. Lenders strongly prefer applicants with traditional W-2 employment. The days of bankers giving out mortgages like Oprah gave out cars are long gone. Even worse, I had only officially been in business full-time for a year. Banks require two years of business tax returns just to pre-approve a mortgage. In short, our chances at a mortgage and our dream home did not look good. But Jeff Smith made it work. After the big banks told me I needed two years of self-employed tax returns, Jeff said he could close our mortgage with my upcoming tax transcript as proof of income. And he did just that. Sure, the process was tedious and there was a lot of documentation involved (client contracts, letters of confirmation from clients, 1099s, etc.), but Jeff guided me through each step and always responded right away via text, email, or phone; he even worked a weekend to ensure I could get a pre-approval letter to make an offer on a very competitive home that had just hit the market. In the end, our offer was accepted and we now own the home. I highly recommend Jeff Smith and First Ohio Home Finance to anyone seeking a mortgage, especially those who have less than ideal circumstances. He is pleasant yet very determined in making sure you close on your home in a timely fashion.

When I was referred to First Ohio from Lending Tree, I was approached via email about using them for a home loan. Our initial contact was friendly and helpful. As the process went on, our agent, Joe Filia, kept calling back with more and more requests for just one more thing. Since the closing date we hoped for was within 45 days, we became concerned when we were told that we would likely easily qualify for a certain type of loan with a quoted payment estimate, but he was going to try to get a different type of loan with a better payment - we knew that any delay might cause us to miss the close date and lose the contract on the house. I continued sending all the backup documentation asked for, and we heard back that the appraisal was below the sale price of the house, although the comps in the neighborhood clearly showed it to be well within, if not below, market value. Then we were contacted after the loan went to underwriting and were given 6 options, all of which were at least $100+ more per month, and required significantly different arrangements with the title, down payment, and debt retirement than originally discussed. When asked to email all options, these are what we got. Then when my wife spoke with Joe, he patronized her saying you dont have all the facts, so let ME go over them for you. He followed this with an indignant email saying he had been cut off by her before he could give her two more options. We asked for ALL the options up front on email - then these two suddenly became viable?! We are doing business with another more professional lender now, and are out the appraisal fee for an appraisal which was apparently uninformed with regard to the current housing market in that area. I cant speak to all the lenders available on Lending Tree, but avoid First Ohio, whatever you do.

We have used First Ohio Home Finance since 1998 for all our home purchases and refinances, and we just refinanced again earlier this month to take advantage of the low rates. The entire staff conducts themselves with the utmost integrity, and always has the clients needs in mind when presenting finance options. We were kept informed every step of the way, were given detailed instructions on what information we needed to provide, and we always made a final decision knowing First Ohio Home Finance had our best interests in mind. This most recent re-fi was fast and painless, from start to finish it was done in less than two weeks! I would not hesitate to use them again, and would gladly recommend them to anyone looking for a smooth, easy path to purchasing or refinancing a home.
