University Gun & Pawn Shop

I have to say, University Gun and Pawn is, without a doubt, one of the worst-run gun stores I've ever encountered. Do not waste your time here—they are absolutely terrible in every way imaginable.

Their listed hours are a joke. I visited three separate times on different days when they were supposedly open, but the store was locked up with no sign of life. I've called their number multiple times and sent emails—absolutely no response or call back. The silence is deafening, and it shows they don’t care about their customers.

Their online presence is just as much of a disaster. Their website is outdated and has no indication that they’re even open or closed, leaving you in the dark. And to make matters worse, they use a basic Yahoo email address instead of one tied to their own domain—completely unprofessional. It also took them over two weeks just to respond to help me submit my eforms. That kind of delay is unacceptable for any business, let alone one selling firearms.

Their customer service is non-existent, and the entire operation seems to be a mess. It’s clear they have zero interest in running a functional business or providing any level of decent service. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this place. I will never shop here again, and I advise everyone else to stay as far away as possible. Find a store that actually respects your time and business, because this one certainly doesn’t.

Ive bought a ton of guns from here, although ive never received a discount for being a repeat customer! They do offer to price match and all their prices are at market value or slightly lower. This is my 6-7th gun from them. I plan to continue shopping here, everybody in the store is very helpful and knowledgeable.

University Gun & Pawn is the Best Gun Shop I have ever had the Opportunity to do business with, I called ahead & Nick was very helpful the next day upon arrival I met Fabio & Frank & Nick in shop. a lot of Firearms dealers dealers are very stiff in their manners like they are concerned of being robbed which is very understandable in the day and age we are in but this shop was very friendly, Helpful and professional and their Prices are great, I felt like they knew me and were happy to see me come back which I will, So every time I see the Firearm I purchased I will remember the great People I met that day for they are more important than anything involving this experience. I can’t believe anyone who is a true firearm enthusiast would have anything negative to say about this place. This place gives off mom & pop shop vibes with big box store selections… what’s better than that? Prices are fair, staff is knowledgeable and kind. The biggest plus about this business is the selection of product. They have all the stuff that actually matters in stock. I highly recommend stopping by if you’re in town.

I am really quite upset by the lack of seriousness of the store. I have bought weapons in that place as have friends of mine but I dont think we will do it again. 2 days ago I went to look for a gun and a young man with long hair helped me and he gave me a price, I had the gun in my hands today I go and he gives me another price 300 dollars but I dont know if it was due to lack of knowledge or bad work or he They see clients looking like fools because when I told them the price they gave me, what they told me was that I had seen another weapon that they didnt have that day because in reality I had even had the weapon I was looking for in my hands. It is a lack of seriousness. and professionalism, now they do want to be given a price today and another tomorrow at their convenience or depending on whether they are good or bad, they can go to that place and live the experience

This is a great place to buy a gun and the staff here is very friendly. The owner will bend over backwards to help his customers. Charlie and the store have been in the Tampa area almost 40 years and the same location for 35 years. He is honest and up front. Great staff, great service and friendly people.

So I never ever leave negative reviews. So lets start out by saying that I liked this shop...I have gotten guns from the before and went back because they were descent people with a good shop. But this time the staff member made it to where I felt like I couldnt shop for a gun. Kept telling me that Im waisting his time and pretty much wanted me to promise him that Ill buy a gun if he was gonna do his job and show me what they have in inventory....I looked at two gun and I guess thats the max you can ask this guy to show you before he is tired of using basic customer service. Any way. Its hard to explain exactly how tone of voice was and everything that was said in a review but dont go here unless you know exactly what you want because shopping for something here is not aloud. The guy will make you feel like a scum bag for waisting his time by wanting to spend your money in his stuff. So I bought some extra ammo because the guy made me feel bad. The ammo was also stupid expensive. Over a dollar a round for 9mm. Customer service is key. Ill even spend more money at a place if they have better customer service. But this place has trash prices and service. At the moment.

Ok , so I bought 5 boxes of ammo , the guy who Rung me up showed me on his calculator WITH TAX $116.87 , so I went out to get my card and came back in to pay for it , the guy put the card into the credit card machine and charged $162.33 , if I ever decide to return to University Gun & Pawn , from now on if I return to their shop I will be making sure that ALL of their price sticker are marked on every box or I will never buy anything else from them EVER AGAIN

They had a Ruger Alaskan in 454 Casull with the 2.5 barrel that I had been looking for. I couldnt find one at any gunshow or dealers with an FFL close to me. I looked on Gunbroker and found a brand new one on their page. Patrick was easy to work with over the phone while doing payment and giving the email to obtain my dealers FFL info. Shipping was quick and I obtained my firearm today(Aug 27). Five stars for good service and having the gun I wanted. Thanks again

I had an encounter with the owner / manager. I went there to sell off some merchandise. To make a long story short, he tried to low ball so I was like forget it man. On my way out this other man who works there (with a Russian sounding accent) makes me an offer on my merch. At which point Im just like sure, why not! Then the Weasel guy comes over and is all like no you cant do that so the Russian guy was like sorry I can not. So I just walked out. The moral of the the story is. Dont do business with unsavory characters like the owner and or manager of this place. The End. P.S. Sharkcoast Tactical is a much better place for all your 2A needs.

Very generous and fair with trade up prices and flat out purchasing your unwanted firearms. I have made 4 buys here . Would recommend to friends and family. Patrick is great , everyone is great. Not pushy, they appear to actually be excited about guns.

Made the mistake of buying here once, won t do it again, same gun in store for 599 was 555 on GunBroker with a $5 pickup fee, way to screw locals that walk in for an extra $40 in your pocket, don t worry though they will be kind enough to give you a $20 box of range ammo they have priced at $40 because they price gunbroker low and most people don t notice quote on phone. don t waste your time.

I ve been in a tough spot recently with vet bills and have had to unfortunately sell some of my firearms. University Gun & Pawn Shop was by far the most ethical, professional, and fair priced in selling my firearms. They actually gave me above asking because they told me they knew it was worth more and they wanted to give me what it was worth. I will be a life-long customer of theirs for both purchasing, FFL transfers, and any sales in the future. Great people!

Went in today on the recommendation of a friend to check out their inventory to see if they might ve had any stamps I wanted to add to my collection. Plenty of employees around who didn t seem to appear busy. They were apparently too busy or too proud to show their inventory to me though and were happy to treat me like I was stupid in the process. My friend told me to go back and say xyz as the magic words and I will be allowed to see the inventory that s so secret I knew about it before having arrived for the first time. I understand to an extent but the way these people dismissed me so quickly and I can only assume because they were judging a book by its cover, I just feel bad for people who still behave that way. Everyone has money to spend these days, no matter how old someone is or how they might look. I would ve been happy to do business here but instead left with a sour taste in my mouth and I will not be returning. I can spend my money elsewhere with people who are happier to let me do so. Imagine trying to keep a business open and profitable this day and age and you are gatekeeping half the products you are allegedly trying to sell. It just doesn t add up. My best and Good luck.

I had a bad experience there. My husband and I (both African American) entered University Gun & Pawn after waiting the required 1 week to pick up my purchase, and there were 4 gentlemen there; 3 employees (one African American and 2 white males), and another white male customer. As I walked into the front door, the another white male employee (whom I did not meet the week prior), looked at me and yelled loudly, You look like someone who belongs in the backseat of my car! I was shocked and stared at him for a min. Only the three white males were laughing (uncontrollably),I did NOT think it was a funny statement, however I regained my composure and said, I come in peace, I only want to pick up my purchase. I left feeling attacked in a sort of way which shot my anxiety through the roof because I am a disabled Veteran. I will never visit this business again.

Ive been a fan of these place for ammo purchases for awhile. It s a hidden gem when it comes to ammo inventory. If I had only continued buying ammo here this place would have 5 stars. Lots of ammo-and I haven t experienced the rudeness that others mentioned. However, I made the mistake of buying a used gun here. I was happy with the purchase price and the experience until I got it home. The misfired so much that it was unusable. I brought it back and they said they would take a look at it. Weeks later I checked on the Gun and they hadn t even looked at it yet. Long story short, it s been TWO MONTHS since the purchase date and they still haven t brought it to a gun smith yet as promised. I would call and check on it and they would always say they would call me back but never did. After 3 visits, and six phone calls over that time period I finally went in and asked if I could just return it. They offered to let me bring it to the gun smith and they would pay for it but I didn t want to have to then wait another period of time for a gun Smith to look at it, order parts, and get around to fixing it. No returns. They offered to let me trade it in towards a different gun. I ended up going with a brand new gun so I wouldn t have to potentially repeat the process. The new gun was $40 cheaper at Bass Pro. I asked if they would match the price and they said no. I left with a new gun that I paid too much for, two months after my original purchase and I left dissatisfied. Like I said, no one was rude, but they certainly were in no hurry to resolve my issue. If you are looking for ammo, this is a great place. If you are looking for a gun, I would look elsewhere first.

Been six months so I stopped in and bought another gun from them. A couple of items that might not be apparent. First, they get customers that do not get it. I had to wait while they explained three times that if someone did not pass a background check before and did not do anything to correct that, they were not going to be able to buy a gun. Second, they are not a typical pawn store with some guns. They have a huge selection. All the walls are covered with long guns and I think, eight display cases of handguns. I have shopped all over Tampa and I think they have the largest in stock sele tion. Third, of course their pricing is listed higher than Rural King or Shooters World but I wont buy something without seiing it, holding it, getting my questions answered. Stop by, definitely worth your time!

Good prices, somewhat open to negotiation. Knowledgeable staff, attentive to customer needs. They are, however, super busy at all times (which is good in this economy!) So be patient. Theyll get to you when they can.

I met their rep at a Tampa gun show. I tell him what I like and he walks me through particulars of a hand gun and tells me call tomorrow afternoon and we work it out. I call him the next day afternoon. Excuse: store is a mess and gotta do inventory, call tomorrow. I call three times the next day. He was not available. I call the following day I get: Hes busy call back in 20 minutes. I call later, he does not come to the phone and I get the following relayed: they dont make them (the guns) with safety any more & those and are special orders. We dont have them. I erased the rest my thoughts ...

I knew this wasnt the store I shouldve purchased from when I walked in & no one greeted me. I shouldve left because I had to go search for someone to assist me. I purchased a drum from here & they would not let me return it because it had a very small scratch on it From it not fitting into my firearm. I had the receipt & they didnt even want to hear what happened nor did they want to work with me after they took my money. Do not shop here because they will do you wrong. Parking is horrible & the customer is horrible. Shop somewhere else where people will appreciate your cash & business.

I previously posted a one star review due to my ignorance, and Ive since changed to 5 stars. I was comparing hollow point rounds to FMJ, not realizing the drastic difference in the cost. As I mentioned in my previous post, my only complaint was the cost, but since that is no longer the case, the person who helped me was friendly and there wasnt a one box per person policy.

The guns, but especially the ammo was extremely over price. This company is price gorging on ammo, and I was told two different prices on one gun. When I address it, I was told that I could shop somewhere else.

Well i pawned my rifle there and what they didnt care to mention was that your not actually getting the loan out on a pawn for your weapon, but that your actually selling your weapon to them without your knowledge. I found this out upon picking my rifle back up, when i noticed the paperwork that they told me to fill out was if i was purchasing a firearm from them. I started to ask him questions about the paperwork and he stated that was the process and they seemed to be upset that i was there to pickup my rifle like hoping that i would lose it over the agreement the one employee kept on mentioning that its a nice rifle and if i wanted to sell it, i stated that i wasnt and he kept on asking. They had me waiting there for over an hour before they let me leave with my rifle because they did a background check on me, wish they didnt check my background when i first came in to pawn it and they also ran the serial numbers on my rifle to see if it was stolen but why would you do that after and not before you took it in as a pawn. It doesnt ad up at all this place is sketchy and i would definitely not recommend anyone to go to this place at all. I felt like they treated me as a criminal or they were trying to find something wrong for that they could endup with my rifle....plain and simple.....

Bought 2 guns in less than 4 months of each other. First gun was a used 9mm that didnt work after taking it back to them, they told me theres nothing they can do about and I would have to call the manufacturer to fix it ( ok no problem, rugger fixed it for free in less than 2 weeks). Second gun I bought from them a tarus judge revolver 3nch chamber which was actually a 2.5 nch chamber because the manufacturer sold them the wrong wrong size chamber and I didnt know until my second range visit because the gun can fire 2 types of ammo.well after my day at the range I call and explain the issue and they tell me theyll get a new gun in for me come Tuesday, Tuesday comes and the owner tells me that he told me dont fire the weapon and since I didnt listen him it voided the ability to get me a new one (the one that I paid for and they refuse to give me). This was the first time I even spoke to the owner and I try to explain to him that I fired rounds before I was aware it was the wrong size gun and when I found out is when I called them. The owner then proceeds to call me a liar telling me I told him it was unfired before I called. He then offered me 200$ for a gun I payed 405$ for , so that he can buy it back and give me store credit

Bought my first gun yesterday. Charlie helped me. He was very patient, knowledgeable, and he helped me pick the perfect hand gun for me without trying to scam me or take advantage. Because of florida law regarding handguns, I have to wait 6 days total to bring it home. Other than that. Transaction was smooth, and I will definitely be returning for more. They litterally have every gun it seems like, and they have the best prices for quality pieces around the Tampa Bay area. I would recommend this place to anybody whos looking to buy a legit, LEGAL, firearm. Thanks guys, see you Thursday.

DONT BUY AMMO here.. if you do make sure you check to see how many is in the pack.. I asked for 2 20 packs of brass .223 ammo and got 12 in one pack and 15 in the other.. found out when I got home.. to top it all off it was steel case.. who sells half the ammo at full price... staff seemed nice though despite that bs..

I walked in to see what I can buy now that Im a Floridian. They knew I was fantasizing about what I may purchase in the future but paid attention to me anyway. I saw my future 47 with a forged receiver and folding stock for about $560. Not too bad. Ill rate this place higher or lower when I possibly become a customer.

I stopped by their store and found a great gun for an extremely fair price, and I wasnt even looking to buy one. :) Their staff were very friendly and very knowledgeable without having the typical we know it all attitude that makes me immediately walk away from most shops and they have an excellent selection of quality arms. Im very thankful to them and glad I decided to just stop in for a minute while passing by on the way home from the VA hospital. And, in case anyone wonders if I know of what Im talking about on their prices and knowledge, Ive been in the Marine Corps, Navy and Army, so I know a little more than the average person about these things.

Seriously the worst service I have ever encounterd. The owner (Charlie) is so smug and doesnt even acknowledge customers. I seriously waited in front of him for 30 minutes while he took several personal calls and then he had the nerve to tell an associate he couldnt speak to me, right in front of me. He said he had to go sell an HK. So as im leaving and walking out i finally say thanks Charlie for the service and he speaks to me for the first time and says he is so busy thens starts to boost about this new gun shop hes opening and bars he owns etc.. In the time it took to tell me about his mediocrity success he could have assisted me. I decided to come back another day thinking perhaps i caught him on a bad Day; not the case. Again he completely ignored me i waited in his shop for another 20 minutes before another employee assisted me. While im waiting for this colleague of his he has customers waiting for service and he decides now is a good time to try a comppresor he took on trade earlier in the week. In addition he had a prostitute standing on the corner of his building and crack heads at the entrance asking for money.His prices are super high, the products are out dated and non brand the customer service is horrible. Do yourself a favor and go up the street to shooters world you will be glad you did.

Great, helpful staff. Fair prices and trades. Excellent inventory of some very interesting firearms. The gentlemen that work there are very professional and polite and very respectful to veterans. Plan to do most or all of my business there.

Always can deal and always got the best prices. To the guy who says Shooters World gunsmiths know what they are doing..........you sir, are either blind or mentally retarded. Shooters World is where the turds that dont flush wirk and talk about HIGH prices? Geez............... And riding up on a bike to a store bordering the ghetto is not cool. I can safely say that I have always got the best deals ever there and used them for consignment, Sad to hear of losers getting their feelings hurt.

Will never step foot in this store again, Over priced, out dated. At first I was talking with an older gentlemen who did nothing but curse and try to be fancy with his words and terminology. At first I gave him a shot, didnt seem like he knew a whole lot except from what he did in his military days. Then a younger white guy who seemed nice, but was Verry rude when I was talking to him about a purchase.if I had any advice for this place is to take a customer service training course, respect your customers or you will never see them again. I maintained being nice with the staff and refrained from saying a few things while I was in their about their device...I know to shop now, NOT UNIVERSITY GUN AND PAWN

I had never been treated with such disrespect. I walked in that store with $2,000 ready to buy an AR-15 and whatever leftover of 556 ammo. That day I was riding my bicycle, because I try to keep in shape. Upon arrival to the store, I was greeted by an old man with the words,What do you want?As he reached the counter, he noticed I had brought in my bike and said to me leave that outside. I replied sir, you do not have a way to tie my bike down, this is not a good area, and my bike is very expensive. He replied to me that he didnt give a s**t. At that time I turned my bike around and rode it to Shooters World. Once there, I purchased and AR-15, 200 rounds of 556 with a year worth of membership. They even watched my bike for me while i went to pick up my truck. If you need anything gun related, go to Shooters World and skip this place all together. An alternative if you are closer to 301 is Shoot Straight. Both of these places will treat you with the utmost respect and excellent customer service.

I have originally planned on only buying a Rutger SR9c 9mm, which is great, but I also liked an AR15 Olympic Arms 5,56. I bought an accesory that was a Nc Star Scope 4x30RE but only to find out through Shooters World gunsmiths that the scope was Bad and unadjustable. I took it back to University Gun & Pawn to be told go adjust it yourself and that they could not do anything about it. I bought this weapon on November 18 and I went back on December 3. Unbelievable. University Gun & Pawn I give you 1/4 of a star.

Excellent shop if you dont mind the neighborhood, but the shop is very safe inside. Have made numerous purchases there and its always been a pleasant experience. Quality items but thats to be expected. Prices higher than nearby competitors.Poor customer relations that differs from one employee to another. Orders get lost. Apparently too many employees or poor or no training. You may be ignored completely or made to feel like their jackpot of the day. I will not return.

If you dont want any service and want to look at a bunch of crap guns and empty display cases well youve come to the right spot! I was looking around for about 10 minutes and no one even acknowledged my presence...there were at least 3 people working behind the counter too...prolly more of a pawn shop type atmosphere where everything is over priced and they dont care if you buy something.

I have been there a couple of times and the guys are a little bristly but not bad, they like to show up a little late and leave a little early, but they have a good selection and good prices. I was treated well both times and even sent my wife in to pick up her gun, she had no issues either. We will continue to shop with them.

I have tried a few times to find a decent buy and each time the prices are equal to new or maybe more than new for used items. The 1st time I went in, I asked for a pump shotgun and the associate put a semi auto in my hands and said, this is what I would get. Forget that it is low end used semi-auto that was priced at the same price as new. I am done trying.
